| Dual sport motorcycle ride with Tommy
Barlow in the
PA
Grand Canyon on 10-24-10 Photos and descriptions by Jamie Montanus, Rochester, NY Nice 130 mile ride through the mountains catching some late fall foliage. The day began rather chilly, but turned out to be a nice day. We parked in our usual spot in Ansonia and rode state forest roads to Leetonia, Cedar Run and then Renova, hitting the very best, most scenic back country dirt roads possible. This was the scene from Colton Point
State Park on Saturday morning. This is the northernmost point of the Pine Creek Gorge,
aka, the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. After chasing the Millenium Falcon half way
around the galaxy in search of Hans Solo - and not being able to locate R2D2 and
C3PO, Boba Fett, pictured below, had to settle for these two reconnaissance
droids. Working our way towards Cedar Run, this is Mill
Run Road - a little out of our way, but too sweet to pass up. Tommy, oops, I mean Boba, posing next to Elk Run Vista After following Cedar Run as it tumbles down from
the mountains, we
arrive in the quaint hamlet of Cedar Run, PA where it seems to be all closed up
for the winter. When I was here just last week, the place was mobbed with a
group of dual sport bikes, and 15 to 20 bicyclists who had been riding the Pine
Creek Rail Trail. No matter how many times I come here, I never get
tired of it. More Cedar Run View of Pine Creek near Cedar Run.
More Pine Creek. Posing along a particularly sweet section of
Francis Road. Around every corner on this road is another postcard-worthy view.
This is Hyner Run Road, left branch. The right
branch of Hyner Run Road is also very sweet, although paved. More Left Branch Hyner Run Road. There is
non-stop scenery along Hyner Run as it cascades out of the mountains. After Hyner Run Road, we hop on Route 120 (aka,
the Bucktail Trail) for a quick jaunt over to Renovo, surrounded by mountains
and located on the banks of the Susquehanna River, where it seemed like we
stepped back in time. Stopping for lunch at 'Yesterdays', which used to
be the old YMCA
We followed Lick Run back to Route 6, where it
was just a few miles back to the truck. Pine Creek
